What's disturbing about "hardening our schools" to assault?

Today, at a far right-wing gathering in Washington, the NRA struck back with its own vision for America.  In his speech at CPAC, NRA leader Wayne LaPierre took a brief break from blaming liberals and stoking cultural resentment to tell us what the NRA wants to do about school shootings:
"Everyday young children are being dropped off at schools that are wide-open, soft targets for people bent on mass murder. In every community in America...they must come together to implement the very best strategy to harden our schools, including effective, trained, armed security...and that has to happen NOW."
Well, OK, consider the source but in truth this is where we have been going for years.  We have drug sniffing dogs.  Armed security trained to pacify and take down unruly students.  Misbehavior is a crime. Take a breath -- it's not the kids, it's not the teachers, it's not the poverty or the black or browness -- It has been all bad all the way for schools and most of the bad has come from on high by political edict in the form of just bad policy.  Several states have already authorized teachers to conceal carry.  LaPierre's comments are shocking but what's disturbing is how low we have already come.
