Your Recycling Gets Recycled, Right? Maybe, or Maybe Not - The New York Times

Like I have said for years -- Recycling is a hoax that has for years allowed and indeed promoted continued production of wasteful single use packaging by promoting the myth that we all need to pitch in but we can save the planet. "Responsible citizens/consumers we must recycle everything."  Now even the New York Times has caught on.

Revision:  In Sonoma County just after this article came out Recology won contracts from the disgraced former trash hauler and held public meetings to show and tell and flatly claim that is is illegal to put recycling in the dump so they store it in a warehouse until it can be sold.  This may be their public claim but it does not make much sense in that warehouse space in the bay area costs vastly more than the value of much recycling and so this is very likely a partial truth about a very broken system at best at worst a lie covering up some other means that are used to "externalize the cost" of this lost associated with the broken system.  I do not have direct evidence but even in the face of this claim I maintain that what is really needed is an audit with complete transparency.
